How can rFOIL insulate if it's so thin?
It is a common misconception that insulation must be thick to perform well. It is also a common mistake to consider only a material's R-Value when choosing insulation. It is highly possible for a thinner reflective material to provide better thermal performance than a thicker non-reflective product.
The thin aluminum layer in rFOIL reflects radiant heat energy; and this ability is unrelated to the product's overall thickness and R-Value.
What is the best way to heat a yurt? Can I use a wood stove?
In true yurt style, there are plenty of cozy options! You can heat your yurt just like a regular home — with a wood or pellet stove, propane or electric heater, fireplace, central heating system, or radiant floor heating.
If you choose a stove, it’s vented through the side wall using a chimney exhaust shield. As always, follow the manufacturer’s installation guidelines and your local building codes to keep things safe and snug.
How is lighting installed?
The sky’s the limit when it comes to lighting your yurt! Track lighting along the rafters adds a stylish touch, while overhead lights, ceiling fans, and floor or table lamps keep things bright and cozy. You can power them with electricity, propane, or even a 12-volt system — whatever fits your yurt lifestyle best.
Can yurts have bathrooms?
Bathrooms can be installed in the same manner as in a conventional building, and plumbing would be brought up through the floor. The ceiling can be framed to a standard height, or taken right up to the rafters.
Will rFOIL prevent condensation? If so, how?
Yes. rFOIL is an outstanding solution to condensation problems. The thermal break provided by the bubbles prevents warm, moist air inside a building or duct system from interacting with cold air surface. When installed correctly, with secure seams, condensation will not occur on the surface of the rFOIL.
Can I have plumbing in a yurt?
Yes. Plumbing can be incorporated depending on your setup, whether you're connecting to existing services or using off-grid solutions.
How do you divide up the space inside?
Because yurts are an open-concept, the layout can be flexible and tailored to how you want to live.
Many people use furniture and layout to define areas like sleeping, living, and cooking spaces.
For more privacy, partial walls or dividers can be added - especially for bathrooms or bedrooms. These can be simple framed sections and should be planned around the yurt's structure to ensure everything works together properly.
Can you add a kitchen to a yurt?
Yes - a kitchen can be added to a yurt.
Many people include kitchens areas ranging from simple setups to more built-out designs. Because yurts are open-concept, the space can be arranged to suit your needs, with kitchen areas defined through layout and placements.
If interior walls are added for spaces like bathrooms, bedrooms, or even loft supports, the kitchen can be built along those walls to create a more defined and functional loayout.
Planning ahead is helpful, especially if you're including electrical or plumbing, to make sure everything is set up properly.
